The Black Eyed Peas promised a party at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday (February 6), and the pop supernovas definitely delivered, with a performance teeming with lights, dancers and surprise appearances from celebrity pals.

Following a Chatter.com commercial that showed animated versions of the Peas showing off their social-media skills, the group kicked things off with their 2009 smash “I Gotta Feeling,” descending from the ceiling on illuminated platforms onto a stage surrounded by a cluster of dancers clad in white bodysuits. The foursome led the team of fist-pumping troops in “Tron”-like getups, with Taboo sporting an outfit covered in flashing lights, will.i.am rocking a shiny hairpiece, Apl.de.ap wearing huge bright studs and Fergie vamping it up in bling-laden shoulder pads.

When the speaker-busting bass of “Boom Boom Pow” dropped, the dancers dispersed across the field to create arrow-shaped formations as the glow-in-the-dark lights on their suits illuminated the stadium. Then rumored surprise guest Slash of Guns N’ Roses rose from below the stage for a “Sweet Child O’ Mine” duet with Fergie. The GNR great rocked a finger-searing solo in a studded version of his signature black top hat as more angular platforms and dancers moved across the gridiron. The platforms were bearing scores of marching-band musicians who blasted their horns and pounded away on their drums as the Peas went into “Pump It” and blue lights splashed across the production.

Quick streams of fog heralded the arrival of the Peas’ second surprise guest, Usher, who swooped in on a long chain to bust out his will.i.am-assisted joint “OMG.” Rocking a sparkly collar on an otherwise all-white ensemble, the R&B hitmaker cranked out several counts of energetic choreography, enlivening moves from his “OMG” video and at one point jumping over Will and landing in a split.

A spray of pyro ushered in the collective’s breakout 2003 hit “Where Is the Love?” as the oddly shaped platforms spelled out the word “Love” in bright-red letters. The team of dancers, which appeared to have multiplied to over 100, formed hearts across the field as will updated the lyrics of the smash with lines like, “Obama, let’s get these educated.”

Then the group jumped ahead to their most recent single, 2010′s “The Time (Dirty Bit),” as several back up hoofers rocking cubed helmets joined the Peas onstage and dancers lined up along the gridiron to simultaneously bust out the Running Man, a move which drew cheers from the crowd.

The platinum-selling Peas wrapped up the performance with a reprise of “I Gotta Feeling,” as the quartet triumphantly signed off amid of blitz of fog, firepower and flashing lights.

Ripping the halftime show was clearly a touching moment for will, who tweeted beforehand, “Me and apl started the peas when we were 16 yesterday we were dreamin now were livin it. Wow. I’m not crying out of sadness or nervousness its joy and pride and memories and the journey.”

And once the crew left the stage, the frontman was not only proud, but pumped. “That was so freakin sick,” he wrote. “Wow…!!!”

‘Dark Knight Rises’ On Set: Best Pittsburgh Sneak Peeks!

24 Aug

As production on the 2012 Batman flick wraps in the Steel City, we detail the five coolest looks to hit the Net.
By Eric Ditzian

On the set of “Dark Knight Rises” in Pittsburgh

In late May, to mark the start of “Dark Knight Rises” production in Pittsburgh, we got our first look at the newest villain to face off against Batman: Tom Hardy as the broad-backed, rubber-face-mask-rocking Bane. That juicy, studio-approved first look, it turned out, was a harbinger of spoiler-y sneak peeks to come.

Over the next three months, we feasted our eyes upon villains and vehicles and massive action set pieces and more. The free-for-all, though, is probably at an end, as “Dark Knight Rises” production in Pittsburgh has wrapped ahead of a shift to Los Angeles, where on-set security is likely to be significantly tighter. So as we bid goodbye to Batman’s adventures in the Steel City, let’s take a look at the five coolest things we’ve peeped since May.

Check out photos from the set of “Dark Knight Rises.”

Kickoff at Heinz Field
Early in August, director Christopher Nolan took over the Pittsburgh Steelers’ home stadium of Heinz Field for an epic action sequence in which NFL stars like Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu got into character as the Gotham Rogues in front of 10,000 extras. For once, these gridiron greats weren’t the center of the action, as the game was interrupted by the explosive arrival of Bane and a few camouflaged tumblers.

Crashing Catwoman
We need not rehash the not-exactly-warm reception to the photographic debut of Anne Hathaway in character as Catwoman. A far more perilous situation unfolded days later when Hathaway’s stunt double crashed the Batpod into a cameraman working with a super-expensive IMAX camera. Reportedly, neither the camera nor the operator was injured. So that’s good, as was the peek at the scene they were shooting: police officers beating the heck out of people outside Gotham City Hall.

Totaled Tumbler
Everywhere you looked in Pittsburgh, there were tumblers — those armed vehicles Christian Bale made into his newfangled Batmobile. Where’d they all come from? And what the heck happened to one of them, which wound up buried in rubble? Our guess is Batman’s latest badass vehicle is responsible for the damage.

Batwing Takes Flight
The latest vehicle, of course, is the Batwing. In mid-August, we got our first look at the craft, which has popped up in previous “Batman” films but never before in Nolan’s versions. Gone was any resemblance to director Tim Burton’s earlier iteration, or the Batplanes present throughout comic-book history; in their place was an ultra-realistic aircraft that seemingly owes its existence, like the tumbler, to a military design.

Bane Takes on Batman
Of all the many character-centric set pics, our favorite is probably this one of Bane grappling with Batman. For all the high-tech gadgets this movie will feature, the fight between these two adversaries might well come down to some old-fashioned fisticuffs. The photo also showcased a fat scar on Bane’s neck, perhaps Nolan’s way of explaining the villain’s life-or-death addiction to an experimental drug called Venom.

Justin Bieber’s VMA-Nominated ‘U Smile’: Frame By Frame

23 Aug

‘We took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist,’ director Colin Tilley says of clip, which is up for Best Male Video.

In the Colin Tilley-directed “U Smile” video, Justin Bieber meets some girls on the street and becomes smitten with one of them. He then takes her to hang out with him at a big concert hall, where he makes her swoon by playing the piano for her.

The sugary-sweet clip is up for Best Male Video at the 2011 Video Music Awards, and Tilley, who also worked with Bieber on “Never Let You Go,” spoke to MTV News about the behind-the-scenes of making the video just days before the VMAs go live Sunday.

The video opens with Bieber meeting some fans outside a theater, and the Flip cam footage they used for audio ended up making the final cut. “During this scene, we were only outside for 15 minutes, but literally paparazzi were everywhere,” Tilley recalled. “It was pretty difficult, but I’m happy with the finished product. This whole intro scene was actually done very fast, because we didn’t have much time before the sun set, so we really just had to go full-throttle.”

While paparazzi and nature proved to be obstacles, a third was making sure that Tilley cast the perfect leading lady. “The girl’s gotta be really great … she was really nice and she did a great job,” he said. “Justin and her clicked really well.”

The video is actually pretty simple, with the focus of it being on “our classic piano in this beautiful theater, lots of great lighting. This is pretty much focused on Justin’s performance.

“This song, in general, when I first heard it, I kind of got the feel that it was a more mature feel for Justin,” Tilley continued. “So we took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist and as a kid growing up. … For me, this was kind of the place he goes every night to practice, so he was willing to take this girl he saw on the street and take her into his world.”

For Tilley, the standout shots are of Bieber hanging out in an alleyway, calling to mind the images in Michael Jackson videos. “This is probably my favorite setup in the video,” he said. “In this alleyway, it had a whole Michael Jackson feel. It was pretty iconic for Justin at the time.”

As it turns out, the video was shot right after the 2010 VMAs, when Bieber took home his first-ever Moonman. “The night before, he had won an award and he just came to set with a great attitude; he was super positive,” Tilley said. “I hadn’t worked with Justin for probably a year. He’s so much fun to work with. He’s got a really cool attitude on set.”

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

‘Fright Night’: The Reviews Are In!

23 Aug

Colin Farrell flick ‘blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds,’ critics say.
By Kara Warner

If you’ve seen the “Fright Night” trailers or are familiar with the ’85 cult classic, you know this is not your run-of-the-mill vampire movie — at least by today’s “Twilight” standards, anyway. There are no swoony undead to be found in this horror-comedy — just a lot of blood and plenty of laughs.

Here at MTV News, we’ve been amped about the film from the get-go, and even featured it as part of our exclusive Sneak Peek Week leading up to the Movie Awards. The film stars Colin Farrell as a bloodthirsty vampire who heads to suburbia and terrorizes his next-door neighbor Charley, played by “Star Trek” veteran Anton Yelchin. Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays vampire convert “Evil” Ed Thompson, “Harry Potter” alum and former “Doctor Who” David Tennant is vamp-hunting showman Peter Vincent and “Solitary Man” breakout Imogen Poots portrays love interest Amy, with Toni Collette and Dave Franco also popping up.

Now that the well-received reboot is finally in theaters, it’s time to see what the critics think. Grab your garlic and hold onto some holy water as we sift through the “Fright Night” reviews.

The Original Story Vs. The Reboot “You’ll need a taste for nostalgia to really appreciate ‘Fright Night,’ which knowingly blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds. Authenticity is the key to the movie’s success: the remake is actually based on a 1985 horror flick, and was written by Marti Noxon, well-known for her work on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ One thing’s for sure: if you’re expecting the self-serious brooding of ‘Twilight,’ you’re gonna be disappointed. But if you have a soft spot for cult horror comedies like ‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘The Monster Squad,’ or even the first ‘Fright Night,’ this ought to be right up your (dark) alley. Noxon and director Craig Gillespie update the attitude for a post-’Buffy’ generation, but their remake is generally faithful to the original.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

The Performances “Former ‘Doctor Who’ star David Tennant has a plum role as a Criss Angel-like Vegas cheeseball whose vampire-themed stage show might hide a special connection to vampire lore. It’s a big, fun performance overshadowed only by Farrell, who plays his character as a monster who’s learned to use an ordinary-dude exterior to blend in with his new surroundings. When he asks Yelchin for a ‘sixer,’ Farrell delivers his lines with a Matt Dillon-like flatness, but his eyes tell another story: Beneath the surface, he’s all coiled hunger and pitiless manipulation, doing what he has to do to get close to victims who, against their better judgment, want to get close to him. He creates almost unbearable tension by doing virtually nothing at all, and though ‘Fright Night’ eventually reveals him as the vampire equivalent of the f—ing shark from ‘Jaws,’ it’s never better than when it lets him poke his fin just above the surface.” — Keith Phipps, the Onion A.V. Club

The Final Word “As in the earlier film, this one dances always at the edge of comedy. It especially has fun with the Rules of Vampire Behavior, which Jerry even teases Charley about. Without spoiling a single thing, I can tell you that one of the inevitable stakes through the heart in this movie is an inspired use of product placement. As vampire movies go, ‘Fright Night’ is a pretty good one.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

23 Aug

Album art from Pink Floyd, Blur and David Bowie also included.

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.’s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling StonesLet It Bleed, Led Zeppelin‘s IV, David Bowie‘s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells, The Clash‘s London Calling, New Order‘s Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream‘s Screamadelica, Pink Floyd‘s The Division Bell, Blur‘s Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay‘s A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor “the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people’s lives,” the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album’s iconic imagery.

“Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him,” he said. “That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan “a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today’s issue date.”

“We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps,” the message read. “Very nice they are too.”
